Wedding Cake In The Middle Of The Road

I must say, when I first read this heading it gave me the grills!! Coming from a family that designs, makes and enjoys decorating wedding cakes, I can appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into it.  Wedding cake in the middle of the road can only mean disaster and a huge disappointment for the creator!

As my gran is a professional wedding cake designer and decorator, I understand what goes into making a wedding cake. The beauty and definition that my gran is able to craft with her own two hands is the true heart and soul of someone with intense passion.  You see, it’s not just about making the cake look beautiful, it really starts with the actual cake… the cake underneath all the decorations.  The actual cake, whether it is chocolate, vanilla, sponge, carrot or fruit cake has to be delectable, perfect and moist, it is the foundation of that cake.

Next comes the marzipan and plastic icing… this is tricky.. I have been going to lessons with my gran and let me tell you… it’s not as easy as it looks.  The hand work, the perfection, the utter craftsmanship that gets put into this is a great deal.  Especially time.  Once you’ve reached this part, then comes the creations of decorations …. Flowers, hearts, circles, twirls, puffs of plastic icing swivels, spots, dots, butterflies, wings, numbers, leaves…. Anything that you like can be created! It’s all in your heart and mind of what you want.

Finally, once the cake has been baked, sealed to perfection, decorated with absolute precision, it is packed, very well into a box and delivered to the people who will also appreciate it and enjoy it.  Creating a cake like this is hard work, time and expensive but… it is also such a pleasure.  To see what we are capable of and to be able to appreciate such a beautiful sight brings joy to everyone and happiness.  I cannot think of anything worse than for those people to experience that wedding cake in the middle of the road.

What a wonderful interpretation of this topic, it is a truly heartfelt piece. I really enjoyed it; thanks for the reminder of all that goes into something like this, an element people often forget…dedication and passion.

Wow that cake is beautiful! The icing flower looks like a REAL flower! Wedding cake design is a talent I wish I had and even if I did, I don’t think I have the patients to pull it off. Awesome blog, I really liked that you pulled the angle from personal experience.
